Ultra, ultra wide … Sigma 10-20mm on the K10D

Ever wondered how a 15mm field of view looks like?
On a recent trip back to my hometown, Penang, I chanced upon a camera shop having the Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6 EX DC in Pentax K-mount.
Fortunately for me, I was having my Pentax K10D.
The shopkeeper was kind to allow me to test out the lens.
I wasn’t really interested in ultra wide zooms, especially after having a lukewarm experience with the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 DX on my previous Canon 30D.
Nevertheless, I thought 15mm will be more fun, and took some shots:

This is really an ultra, ultra wide lens! Distortion is well controlled, although a slight barrel effect is rather unavoidable.
Focusing is quite close, although not as close as the Pentax DA 14mm F2.8 ED. At a minimum focusing distance of 9.4in/24cm, it’s good enough for most use.
What I like about this lens is the colour rendition, and reasonable sharpness. at the full wide 10mm (15mm FOV), you can get creative with this lens. It certainly offers a different kind of fun compare to my DA 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 Fisheye Zoom. This may be well suited for shots like this, and landscape. Try not to use it for people shot at 10mm, especially ladies, if you know what I mean.
Having the flexibility of zooming up to 20mm, it is quite useful for a variety of wide angle needs, but for me, I’m more drawn to the usage at 10mm – again 15mm FOV is really wide!
What I like about the Sigma 10-20mm:
- Ultra wide 10mm (15mm FOV in 35mm equivalent terms)
- Color rendition
- Good sharpness
- Build quality
