Wedding with Pentax K10D

7th July, 2007

An auspicious day for weddings it seems. It so happens that I was asked to help take photographs for a churchmate’s wedding. This is the best time to put the Pentax K10D to the test as to whether the AF will be fast enough, the lenses good enough for such an assignment. I packed my camera bags with:

1. DA 16-45 (main lens)

2. DA 50-200 (sniper!)

3. DA 70 (bokeh king)

4. DA 10-17mm Fisheye (wider, weirder)

Good news is…as opposed to what have probably been mentioned in forums, the AF works very well! No hunting issues with all the lenses I used, and accuracy is spot on. When I review my shots, it’s 100% focused and sharp. I can’t say the same when I had my Canon 30D and EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM more than four months ago.

I use my Metz 54 MZ4i (with SCA 3702) as my main flash almost throughout the wedding. It works very well, as there’s almost no hint of flash in the shots above.

The nice bokeh from the Pentax lenses does wonders to create depth and 3D-look which is essential for wedding shots. I selected maximum aperture on the lenses most of the time. Here’s one with DA 70:

These were shot at f/2.4 with flash. Comparing to this,

The bokeh quality is very much similar, but it is actually taken with DA 50-200 at 150mm f/5.6. The joy of using Pentax lenses is all the shots seem to come from one lens (with consistent bokeh). Let me show you a few here,

…it’s taken with the DA 16-45mm, but notice that the bokeh quality is very similar. It also seems that the lenses render the same color tone, and this really eases my post processing work.

I shall discuss more about flash performance and experience I have with the Pentax K10D in a separate blog. Keep in tune!
